VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a connection service that allows users to access a site privately through a specific server network. VPNs usually work so that users can access areas that they might not be able to visit freely because the server network is blocked.

The barrier or firewall is what makes the user end up needing another server network. VPN functions so users can use other server networks to access restricted sites. Users can connect to the site identified as part of another server network.

Thus, VPN is one of the best possible solutions if someone wants to be much safer online. By doing so, your connection will be channeled through the secure VPN servers that spread globally.

Indeed, as you usually do to install VPN on any other device, you’ll walk through the same steps on Mac. You see, the difference is only the OS and nothing else.

Sometimes, you’ll need an authentication certificate to activate the VPN connection. But most VPN services now work simply. So, users are no longer required to get into the complex method.

However, you can always set the VPN connection manually through a long process. Follow the steps below:

How to Install VPN on Mac?

Step 1: Open the VPN Settings

Of course, the simplest way to have a VPN connection on Mac is by using the VPN installer that’s usually provided right after you buy the subscription. So, no need to wonder how to setup a VPN on Mac, since the process is so easy. However, if you want to do it manually, there are many ways.

The first method you need to do is to access the VPN Settings. You can access it by opening the System Preferences and then continuing until you can find the Network icon. Once you find it, click it.

Step 2: Adding The Connection

Now that you successfully opened the settings, it’s time to enter the necessary data. You see, once you buy a particular VPN service from the provider, usually you’ll get some information related to the account.

By clicking the plus icon (+), you can add a new connection to your device, which in this case, is a VPN connection.

In the option, select the VPN option, and then enter the type of VPN in the given box. This might be different according to the firewall on your device. For Mac, we highly recommend using the IKEv2 protocol since it’s safer than the rest.

You can also enter the VPN name and use your imagination to name it exactly as you wish. Find and enter a name that’s easy to recognize.

After you’re done, click the Create button, and from here, you can move to the next step.

However, please note that you’ll need to log in as an administrator to change this information. While being an administrator, you can easily switch between connections and adjust the security and network settings further.

And as mentioned above, sometimes certain VPN providers will give you a security certification that can be used as a tool to log in. See it as a secure medium to store important data, such as login credentials, that are important.

Step 3: Installing The VPN

Now we’ve come to the process of installing the VPN to the macOS. Once installed, the VPN might work automatically after you turn the device on, although you need to set it first beforehand.

To install the VPN, you need to click the Create button, as mentioned above. And then, you’ll be moved into another window requiring you to fill in any vital information, like the Server Address, Local ID, and Remote ID.

Carefully fill the empty spaces with the correct information, and then after you think the data is right, you can move on to another step. If you can’t find this information, simply ask your provider’s customer service as quickly as possible.

Usually, for the provider’s name, you can use the external ID. The server address can also be put in if there are no alternatives. For the Local ID, you can fill in the data or just leave it blank.

After all the data is appropriately put in, you can move to the next step.

Step 4: Authentication

Now you’ve successfully installed a VPN connection to your Mac. But don’t be happy just yet. You still need to authenticate so the VPN may work as expected.

To do that, you can go to the Authentication Settings option and select the Username option. Now, you can fill the blank space with relevant information. Enter your username along with the password.

And then you can also make the VPN stay connected by putting it on the menu bar. Usually, there’s an option to do that, so click it if you find one. With the button on the bottom right of the screen, you may easily switch between connections if needed. Thus, the process can be quicker and much more flexible than before.

Finally, create a VPN connection, and click ‘Connect.’ You have now successfully installed a VPN on macOS!
