There are several methods for updating your Mac. Apple
Open the System Preferences app or the “About This Mac” menu to update your Mac.
If your Mac is still running macOS High Sierra as well as earlier, you’ll need to update it via the App Store.

However, they, like all devices, require updates from time to time. And, while updates can be inconvenient as well as time-consuming — who has never even put off an update until the last minute? — they’re also vital.

An old Mac is more prone to bugs, crashes, and sometimes even viruses (yes, Macs can get them too). If you wait too long for updates, your favourite apps may stop working entirely.

Apple released macOS Monterey, the newest release of its well-known operating system, in October 2021. And if you’re presently focusing on a Mac, now seems to be a good time to upgrade.

How to update your Mac

There are two major methods for updating your Mac, and which one you use will rely heavily on the macOS version you’re currently using.

Important: Before updating your Mac, make a backup of your computer to ensure that no data is lost in the process. You must also have access to the internet.

Keep in mind that depending on the size of the updates, the speed of your computer, and the speed of your internet, the updates could consider taking anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to download and install.

How to Update a Mac that is running macOS Mojave or later

If you bought or updated your Mac since 2018, you’re probably in this category.

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper-right corner of your screen to open a drop-down menu.
  2. There are 2 different menus here for checking for updates. Select System Preferences or Even about This Mac from the menu.

3. Regardless of which option you select, in the menu that appears, click Software Update.

  1. Allow your Mac to connect to the internet but also check for updates for a few moments. If an update is available, the name of it will be displayed; simply click Update Then or Upgrade Now to install it.

You can also enable automatic updates from this screen by checking the box labelled “Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” This will ensure that you are notified whenever a new update is available without having to open this screen.

How to Update a Mac Running macOS High Sierra or an Older Version of macOS

In late 2017, High Sierra was released. If you haven’t updated since then, you should do so as soon as possible to keep your computer secure.

  1. Locate the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen and click it.
  2. Go to the App Store…

3. In the App Store’s left sidebar, select Updates.

You’ll be given the option to update your Mac from the screen above. Any Mac computer released in 2012 or afterward should be able to update to macOS Catalina at the very least. If your Mac is so old that it can’t even do that, it’s time to upgrade.

And, for future reference, don’t be concerned about accepting an update and afterwards having your computer restart unexpectedly — you’ll be notified if a restart is required.
